The Vibe:

Located in the heart of Providence, Brown University gives students a taste of vibrant city life, celebrating diversity and different perspectives. However, despite this urban setting, Brown still values its spirit of community and social unity on campus. With more than 400 student organizations, students are free to discover and pursue their passions, while creating deeper bonds and friendships. Regarding academics, this prestigious ivy does not lack in academic rigor. However, utilizing “The Open Curriculum,” Brown allows students to be the architects of their own education. Rather than requiring a set of core courses, students personalize their course of study, which allows for more freedom and room for discovery. Students are able to sample courses before choosing one of the 80 programs offered, ultimately creating independent, innovative minds, ready to take on the world as leaders and problem-solvers.

  • Originally, Brown was called “The College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.” It was renamed after Nicholas Brown in 1804, after he donated $5,000 to the school (tuition was only $5 back then!).

  • Brown was the first Ivy League school to instill an undergraduate engineering program.

  • The Van Wickle Gates only open twice per year: inward when first year students are welcomed at Convocation, and outward when graduating seniors pass through at Commencement. Legend says that students who pass through the gates any more times will be cursed!

  • Of the Ivy League schools, Brown was the first to accept students from all religious affiliations and racial backgrounds, reflecting its spirit of openness still today.

  • Brown’s mascot is Bruno the Bear. The Bear was adopted as the mascot in 1887, when Theodore Francis Green placed the head of a real bear over the arch of the trophy room.

  • Brown has many notable alumni including Emma Watson, Ted Turner, John Krasinski, John F. Kennedy Jr., John Sculley, Horace Mann, and Andrew Yang

  • Six Brunonians are competing in the Tokyo Olympics.
